Lessons Learned from the Trenches
My name is Janice Tippett. In 1990, at the tender age of 22, I embarked on an entrepreneurial journey by starting a small graphic design company in my parents' basement. Armed with just a $10,000 loan from a college friend's husband—at a steep 17% interest—I set my sights on what would become a profoundly transformative business adventure. A few years into this journey, my sister joined me, becoming not just a collaborator but a business partner, which introduced both the highs and lows typical of a family-run business. 32 years later, I successfully sold my company and the 18,000 sq. ft. building I had built for it, both for cash.
Reflecting on this journey, filled with its peaks and valleys, I'm often amazed at how it all unfolded. It was a period marked by a spectrum of emotions: fear, excitement, sadness, and utter happiness.
Many moments stand out, some filled with pride and others not so much. However, one constant that I believe was pivotal in navigating my path to success was my approach which I've coined "Tits Out Leadership."
There were countless times when the pressure was immense; times I secretly wanted to curl up on the sofa and hide. Yet, it was my mother's voice that echoed in my mind during those moments, urging me to "keep your head high and shoulders back." I adapted her advice to my own rallying cry: "I know, mom, tits out." This became my mantra to face whatever challenge was before me, whether it was securing loans, navigating legal disputes, constructing buildings, addressing employee issues, or personal dilemmas impacting my business.
"Tits Out" was not just a phrase but a mindset that propelled me to act with courage and resolve. It was especially poignant in an environment where "having balls" was often touted as the requisite for bravery. I'd counter, "I don’t have those, but I do have tits." And let’s face it—we all have them. This isn't about a feminist movement or an anti-male sentiment. It's about fostering courage, confidence, and a culture of celebration for everyone.
I want to share these "Tits Out" moments to inspire others to embrace their own courage, feel more confident, and celebrate their victories. More importantly, I invite you to share your own experiences. This platform isn't just for storytelling; it's a community where we learn from each other and grow together.
This journey isn’t about reaching a destination; it’s about the paths we take and the steps we dare to make.
